According to ISO (International Organization for Standardization) saffron is divided to 3 general groups

  • Saffron in cut filament: dried stigmas of the Crocus Sativus L. flower (with styles removed completely detached from each other). The purest type of saffron is known as Negin and Sargol in Iran, however in Spain it is known as Coupe.
    1. Negin:

      This kind of Saffron is pure and contains stigma without style like common red Saffron. But the remarkable features of this kind is longer and thicker threads (with less broken) than the common Saffron and also the Coloring power that is very high. This type of Saffron considered as one of the top quality Saffron in the world.
    2. Sargol (RED Saffron – All Red Filaments)

    3. This filament type, usually consists of only red parts of stigma (no style & pollen) with a high power of coloring and aroma and flavor. Sargol saffron stigmas range from 3/8” to 1/2” in length. In many other countries it is referred to as coupe saffron, cut or all red stigma.
  • Saffron in filament:dried stigmas with a part of the style of the Crocus Sativus L. flower. This type of saffron is known Pushal in Iran and Mancha in Spain. Using this same type of saffron, but sold in another manner, is Bunched saffron. Just like the name suggests, the saffron filaments are bunched together and tied with tread. This type is called Dasteh in Iran.
    1. Poushal (Mancha):

      This kind of saffron include red stigmas with 2 - 5 mm yellow style thread. The color strength is about 180, 200 USP or even more."Poushal" means massive for its volume resulted from the time and method of harvesting. "Poushal" has the same power of coloring and aroma as "All red filaments" type and it usually use for fantasy and luxury packings.
    2. Dasteh (Bunched):

      This kind usually contains the whole natural threads of Saffron (red and yellow parts) which is bunched and tied with a string. The Coloring strength of Dasteh is usually about 140-160 USP and classified in to ISO category II or III. The red part along with the style and placed on each other and tied by a string.
  • Saffron in powder form:
    1. Saffron Powder:

      particles obtained by crushing the filaments of the Crocus Sativus L. flower using sophisticated machines. The machinery crushes the stigmas in an enclosed and in frigid temperatures, as to not lose quality or quantity.
